Upcoming TWO-Day December/January Class - with Special Guest Instructor Chris Faust

📷 Double the Fun & Double the learning... 🎞️

Chris Faust and I recently connected after I attended the Lucie Awards with my buddy Sid (Kaplan), as while there, Chris had happened to ask me to say hi to Sid for him, which is how I wound up learning about his amazing darkroom (and of his connection with our mutual friend). A couple weeks later, Chris and I were zooming from our own darkrooms and this brief class was born. [Hence the short notice, which is why we are now offering additonal dates.]

We’ve decided to offer this 2-Day Class at at heavily discounted rate, due to the holidays and Chris’ limited availability, so we hope that will make it more affordable for those of you on tight budgets this time of the year.

Course Description

This hybrid class is open to both online and up to 5 in-person participants (at Chris’ darkroom, in the St. Paul, MN area); Online students will be advised on how to inexpensively set-up makeshift darkrooms at home.Participants will be introduced to two very different approaches to making handmade photographs without the use of an enlarger or a traditional darkroom. The first session will focus on cameraless photographs (photograms) and contact prints, made with negatives. Which you can make for your holiday gifts if you wish.

[I will address the less obvious ways of making beautiful works of art and will encourage students to experiment to their hearts desire, while teaching them to print and/or refine their skills; Chris will address ways of using alternative methods to create traditional darkroom prints sans enlarger.]

Start Date Options

12/18/23: 6:45-9:15pm EST

12/28/23: 1-2:30pm OR 6:45-9:15pm EST

Alternative late December Dates (Session 1)

With both of us on 12/26, from 1-2:30pm EST; I am also offering afternoon and evening (EST) sessions all week next week for those who wish to make their handmade gifts in advance of Christmas, as well as during multiple evenings the following week, for those who might prefer to time the class around their time off of work. [Chris will not be able to attend these sessions, but is happy to send along some handouts for those who won’t be ready to start on Monday, 12/18].

Session Two Date Options

12/28/23 (afernoon or evening EST time slots available) - for those who opt to start their sessions in advance of the 25th.

January dates with the two of us will be updated once Chris obtains his work schedule for the month. Thus far, he is only certain of his availability over the holiday weekends (New Year’s and MLK). Afternoon and evening time slots are available; I am also happy to offer additional dates with myself the first and second week of January.

DIY Darkroom & MATERIALS LIST

PLEASE DISCUSS WITH ME BEFORE ORDERING YOUR MATERIALS.
(I am happy to create supply lists via Freestyle, as well as send you links to things Freestyle might not carry. Or make suggestions based on your specific space.)
  • Light-tight room with space to print and running water (long hose will suffice for those printing in sheds or garages).
  • B&W fiber paper (Glossy & Matte will produce different effects, both are effective; Slower papers work best for these processes, but you’re welcome to start on any fiber paper of your choosing).
    • Suggestions: Foma papers - Fomatone MG 131 or 132, or Fomabrom; Ilford papers - I’d suggest sticking to the warmtone, as Ilford papers are not as slow, but the warmtone will be a little slower than the neutral tone. (Other papers are fine, but may be a little more challenging to work with).
  • Traditional B&W developer, any kind. Stop Bath, Ilford Rapid Fix, etc.
    •  I would suggest getting a gallon size of stock solution for each of the necessary chemicals (that’s what you’ll find in the store/online); 500mL will go fast, but you’re also welcome to start with that and just replenish as needed.
  •  Several trays for processing big enough to fit your paper; you’ll want them large enough that the prints have room to move around (glass/pyrex baking dishes will work in a pinch).
    • You will need separate trays for each chemical, as well as a slightly larger one, for your water bath/washing your prints afterwards.
  •  Gloves, tongs (3 pairs, 1 pair per chemical), chemical storage, 1000 mL graduates (you will need 3). Pencils for making notes on back of paper.
Alternate light sources & Materials
  • I’d suggest starting with a flashlight or candle for your alt light source
  • Suggestions for materials are the following (pick 2 to start with, we’ll add more later)
    • Lace, flowers, plants, glitter, foil, saran wrap
Optional Supplies
  • Distilled water, funnels (you can make due with tap water if need be)
  •  Blotter paper or blotter books - for drying your prints
  • Makeshift safelight - we can discuss once you start working on your set-up (cheap red lights, that aren’t too bright will do in a pinch); this is so you can see what you’re doing, while you print. But be careful, you don't want too bright of a safelight in a small area or you could fog your paper.
