Alt Process Work (Photograms)

  • WINDS OF CHANGE (2023)

Winds of Change is my 6th series of cameraless work (since 2020). This sister series to The Many Rings of Saturn and daughter series to Fire & Ice was born in early 2023 and marks the evolution of the photograms to (location specific) landscape photographs. [These unique silver gelatin prints also happened to inspire my vision for the monograph I will soon be seeking funding for.]

This series is more of a spiritual body of work than a change in materials, but it is through the winds of change that the early prints of the series led to my very first location specific photograms. This series is composed of two sections thus far - part one (thus far) was printed on Fomatone MG 131 (glossy) and part 2 (also ongoing) was printed on Fomatone MG 133 (chamois surface), which has a beautiful, slightly metallic, textured surface. [Please note that this paper is less yellow than it appears, the scanner had some trouble reading the tones of the textured surface.]

Most of the prints that made it into part 1 actually commenced as demo prints for 2 different Zoom (photograms/diy darkroom) students (beginning in late 2022); However, it wasn't until the titles and resulting orientation came to me, in January of this year, that the series was truly born.

Materials used thus far include ice, sand, flowers, glitter, and location specific materials collected at Windansea Beach in La Jolla (San Diego), CA.

[Winds of Change recently placed Honorable Mention in LA Photo Curator's Surrealism call for work].

  • THE MANY RINGS OF SATURN

The Many Rings of Saturn concentrates on my processes with ice, among other materials. The first 4 images of the series actually commenced as demo prints for a zoom photograms darkroom student who needed a little help getting out of her head; The remainder was made during my paid artist-in-residence for Frames Magazine, in 2022. [This series is essentially a daughter series to Fire & Ice.]

These one-of-a-kind 11x14 silver gelatin prints (mixed process photograms) were made with ice, sand, flowers, and glitter, and exposed (multiple times) with a dripping candle.

Photograms are unique darkroom prints made without the use of a camera; I began making photograms with alternative light sources due to having an unfinished darkoom at home, when the shutdown happened.

["The Sad Clown (aka Un Chien Andalou)" - is now framed (floating) and available for purchase. $1600]
